Whangārei's iconic harbour bridge, Te Matau a Pohe was officially opened on Saturday 27 July 2013, this is an image from earlier, the building of the bridge.

Inspired by the design of Māori fish hooks crafted of bone, the sleek, pale structure provides a grand entrance and spectacular exit for those arriving at and departing the Town Basin.

The bridge's name was gifted by Whangārei hapū when it opened. Translated, it is 'The Fishhook of Pohe'. Pohe was the Māori chief who welcomed the first English settlers to Whangārei.
